Whether you’re a long-time resident, new homeowner, business owner, or visitor, our mission is to deliver efficient, accessible, and accurate services that support your needs and enrich your experience in our community.
Who We Are
St. Johns County was established in 1821 as one of Florida’s original two counties. Today, it is home to over 300,000 residents and growing. Our county seat is located in the historic city of St. Augustine, the nation’s oldest continuously inhabited European-established settlement.
Our local government operates under a Commission-Administrator form of government, with five elected County Commissioners representing specific districts. Together with our Constitutional Officers—including the Sheriff, Tax Collector, Clerk of Courts, Property Appraiser, and Supervisor of Elections—we work collaboratively to serve the public’s interest with integrity and accountability.
Our Vision
To create a responsive and inclusive community where residents, businesses, and visitors thrive through innovative governance, responsible development, and preservation of our unique cultural and natural assets.
Our Mission
To provide efficient, transparent, and cost-effective services that:
- Protect the safety and welfare of residents
- Maintain infrastructure and environmental quality
- Support education, growth, and community well-being
- Foster economic and cultural development
What We Do
St. Johns County government encompasses a wide range of services and departments, all designed to meet the evolving needs of our diverse community. Here are a few core responsibilities:
Property Appraisal and Taxation
The St. Johns County Property Appraiser’s Office is responsible for assessing all real and tangible personal property within the county. This includes determining fair market value, applying exemptions, and certifying tax rolls used by the Tax Collector to generate annual property tax bills.
Public Safety and Emergency Services
From law enforcement to fire rescue and emergency management, we prioritize the protection and preparedness of our community with dedicated teams and cutting-edge resources.
Infrastructure and Development
Our Public Works, Growth Management, and Utilities departments maintain roads, public facilities, water systems, and oversee planning and zoning to support sustainable development.
Community Services
We are committed to enhancing residents’ quality of life through services like Parks and Recreation, Health and Human Services, Libraries, and Veterans Affairs.
Civic Engagement and Transparency
We believe in open government. From public records to commission meetings, we encourage residents to stay informed and involved in the decisions shaping St. Johns County’s future.
Our Commitment to Residents
St. Johns County prides itself on being a community-first government. We listen to your concerns, value your feedback, and strive to deliver services that reflect the needs and expectations of our people. Our staff, leadership, and volunteers work every day to ensure that St. Johns County remains one of Florida’s most desirable places to live, work, and visit.
